I was looking at a map of AirBNB listings for an upcoming trip to Dublin, Ireland. At first, I sent this to an Ireland-savvy friend and asked for her input. I then sent the map to my trusted sidekick, ChatGPT4o, for advice.
Here’s how it went:
I uploaded the screenshot of the map with the listings. [You do this by clicking on the paperclip icon on the left side of ChatGPT's prompt box. Other models have similar ways to upload an image]
I went back and forth, asking a series of questions:
► "Where should I stay based on the map?"
► "Here are some more details on the group and what we like: (ages, the things we like to do)"
► "Why did you rank the listings and give a summary of the pros and cons and distinctive characteristics of each listing?" [in general, it can help to ask GPT why it does what it does. You might be surprised by the responses].
► "Here’s more detail on what’s important in a neighborhood (safe, access to local cafes and restaurants, etc)" [Providing context is critical for getting the best results from AI].
► "What else can I tell you that will help you pick the best neighborhood?" [I almost always end a session by asking some variation of, "What have I missed?" or "What else do I need to know"]
And, always taking things a bit too far, I asked it to develop a scoring mechanism and explain the weighting for each element of the scoring.
I’m intentionally not sharing one big, consolidated prompt because the most useful thing is to jump in and start trying these tools.
✴ ✴ There’s no perfect prompt for using these tools. It’s best to think of it as talking with a friendly assistant. You need to get your question across with as much context as possible, but it’s OK if you have a typo, use the wrong word, repeat yourself, or use slang. You can give examples and tell it to “pay attention” or “try harder.” ✴ ✴
Onwards.
