AI: Oh Google! How NOT to Present AI

Google pulled it's AI ad from the Olympics

In case you missed it, Google recently pulled an ad for their AI product, Gemini. The spot features a young girl who is a big fan of Olympic runner Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. In the ad, the girl's father asks Gemini to help her write a letter, prompting it with, "Help my daughter write a letter telling Sydney how inspiring she is.”

The backlash was swift. The general feeling is that the ad encouraged a generic fan letter rather than a unique, heartfelt, and wonderfully imperfect expression from a girl to her hero. Sadly, Google's approach reinforces the perception that AI makes us lazy and inauthentic.

What a missed opportunity. Imagine if the dad turned to Gemini as a guide or coach to help with inspiration in how to help his daughter. AI would have acted as a wise teacher who supports the dad in creating a rich learning experience for his daughter.

The ad missed the real opportunity of showing AI’s potential for:

Empowering Authenticity and Creativity: A Gemini-empowered dad helps his daughter express her own unique thoughts and feelings, encouraging personal, creative touches in the letter.

✴ Supporting Parental Guidance: Dad+AI as a supportive tool providing advice and prompts that help develop the child’s voice and confidence in expressing herself.

✴ Enhancing Learning and Connection: Highlight how AI can strengthen the bond between parent and child through shared, educational experiences that focus on personal growth and authentic expression.

This is the prompt I would have liked to see:

► “I can use some support. Act as a wise advisor who understands young girls and help me create a meaningful learning experience based onmy daughter’s desire to write a fan letter to one of her heroes, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. My daughter is asking me for help and I want to make this a learning experience for her. Can you guide me in how to help her express her feelings and gratitude in her own words. Would you provide some questions and an approach to help her reflect on her feelings so I can guide her in writing the letter”

Even Gemini hated the ad. The beautiful irony is that when I asked Gemini if it would run the ad, it replied: "I would recommend holding off on running the ad in its current form.”

I’m curious to know what you thought of Google's ad.
